About Burberry

Burberry is a manufacturer and retailer of luxury apparel, accessories and fragrances. The Burberry name is virtually synonymous with the tan gabardine raincoat pioneered by the company in 1856 when the company was founded in Hampshire, England by Thomas Burberry.

In 1914, Burberry invented the trench coat when it was asked to adapt a design for practical wear by World War I officers in the trenches. By the mid-20th century, the brand’s wares had become fashionable in the United States, worn by style icons from Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s making the trench look unforgettably chic and desirable.

It wasn’t until the late 1990’s that the house became known for much beyond mackintoshes and the infamous beige check.

Burberry entered the new millennium facing some branding and financial challenges but these were addressed by deploying famous models and celebrities, expanding the trench coat range and digitising the brand. Burberry is now a public company with a revenue of £2.8 billion in 2017.
